Readings Under the Trees

Third Saturday in March annually

Now an ALTA signature event, Readings Under the Trees brings established authors and emergent ALTA student writers together each year to celebrate the joy of reading.

Save the date for this FREE picnic-style public affair with live readings from ALTA students and some of your favourite local authors at the Botanic Gardens in Port of Spain. Bring the family, your blanket and eats for an afternoon of enjoyable readings.

ALTA Tutor Meeting

Third Saturday in June annually

The annual ALTA Tutor Meeting is a space for tutors to convene outside of the classroom to “talk shop.” Tutors receive updates on programme delivery, the end of the current academic year and the start of the next.

Each year a featured guest speaker shares information to enhance the ALTA volunteer tutor in their role.

Annual General Meeting

End of October

The ALTA AGM fulfils an obligatory function in the organisation’s calendar of events: the membership elects the Board to act on ALTA’s behalf for the new year and auditors and accounts are confirmed. ALTA’s official financial position is outlined in a report from the Board Treasurer and the Board Chairman delivers an overview of ALTA activities over the last year.

Also on the agenda during the AGM is the distribution of Tutor Certificates to eligible volunteer tutors. To close out the event, tutors splinter off into regional meetings to discuss how things are going in their respective classes, brainstorm ideas and celebrate successes.

ALTA is recruiting new tutors!

Do you enjoy giving back to your community?

Do you have patience, dedication and time to commit?

Do you enjoy inspiring and motivating others?

If the answer to these questions is yes, then Alta invites you to consider becoming a volunteer tutor.

Elsa d’Andrade – Now I am not ashamed

I heard about Alta on the television advertisement and wanted to be able to improve my reading and writing, spelling, and dictation. It was not so easy but with time and patience and a lot of hard work, I gained another important skill.

Hemlata Mohammed – It makes me feel independent

I am proud of myself having all these skills.  It makes me feel independent. I continue to try to get better at all the skills that I have learned.  It will be great to become an expert in them and maybe use them towards a career in the future.

Winston James – ALTA is like
the soil

Alta helped me in my agriculture job. I use chemicals. Before I just throw some until I think it is enough to spray the grass. But now I read the label so I know how much I need to use. I didn’t know how to read until Alta taught me to break up my words.
