ALTA Online Features
Online learning provides new opportunities and the following features have been added to the successful ALTA learning model:
Independent learning
Students navigate their learning experience and work at their own pace. With an internet-enabled device, a student can access their learning at any time from any location.
24-hour Help Desk & Remote User Support
The Help Desk is available 24/7 and shows a how-to video of someone doing the activity using a think-aloud method. It also allows you to report an issue directly to us up to 3 times a day. If you need a more personal approach, ALTA User Support is available Monday to Saturday 8am-8pm via phone or WhatsApp.
Built-in individualized review of key skills
Programmed intelligence detects where the student made errors to present matching review activities for phonics, sight words and spelling.
Student progress and performance system
This tracks student progress through each lesson, and for scored activities, tracks performance by literacy skill. The system continuously monitors student’s performance and correct responses. Student responses get immediate feedback with audio praise and a green tick if correct.
Re-do options to attain mastery
Students can click on any activity they have done to repeat it. The application also has an intelligent re-do feature which guides students to re-do activities with low scores.
Student progress page
Progress is displayed as a bar chart and performance is shown via gold, silver and bronze medals. Students see at a glance their progress and performance in each literacy skill area.
Assessment Book
Literacy level is determined by the ALTA Online Assessment Book. This book usually takes about half an hour to complete, though this varies depending on familiarity using a computer, as well as the user’s literacy level.

Certification
ALTA Online provides e-certificates in printable format when the level is mastered.

Teaching Approach
In converting classroom content to the interactive screen format, ALTA has maintained the integrity of our teaching methods tried and tested in the community and Youth Lit classrooms:
Learner-centered approach with content relevant to students’ lives and selected to foster essential life skills, self-esteem, tolerance and social cohesion
Sequential explicit teaching of phonics, reading and spelling skills using methods developed for teaching dyslexics and aligned with the science of reading
Continuous assessment instead of tests, with certificates awarded based upon mastery of skills
Use of directed discovery approach to build critical thinking
Games to make learning fun

ALTA Online Impact
The ALTA Online Student Hub, launched in May 2025 at ALTA’s Belmont office, is a modern, fully air-conditioned learning space created to expand access to quality literacy education through ALTA Online.
Equipped by the Digicel Foundation in partnership with Shell Trinidad and Tobago, the Hub accommodates up to 20 students at a time using tablets or desktops with headsets, thus removing the technology barriers that can limit participation.
Within the first 9 months, the Hub initially hosted 16 post-SEA students for their last term. Then students from three Belmont schools started in September/October. These students attend daily, accompanied by teachers trained by ALTA to mentor them and supported by a dedicated ALTA staff member.

Launch of ALTA Online Student Hub: Sponsors Digicel Foundation and Shell Trinidad & Tobago interact with Belmont Primary school students as they work on ALTA Online lessons.
The impact is already clear. Of the 75 students aged 9–14 who have enrolled:
- 68% have met the target of completing their first e-book in 3 months, while the others trail closely behind mainly due to absenteeism.
- 4 students have exceeded expectations and completed three e-books to graduate Level 1 in a record-breaking 3 months.
- Teachers report measurable improvements in students’ performance, confidence, and enthusiasm for learning.
