How should I talk about ALTA to someone who needs to improve their literacy?
Find a private place and time to talk.
Choose your words. Instead of saying ‘illiterate’ and ‘slow’, use ‘difficulties with reading or writing’. Say ‘improve your reading & spelling’ versus ‘learn to read and write’.
Draw from your own challenges with mastering a new skill. “I found learning to ___ very difficult.”
Relate this to the skills of reading, writing and spelling. “Like ___, reading is a skill. As with all skills, some find it easy and others difficult. If reading and spelling are difficult for you, this does not mean you can’t learn. It just means it will take longer and you have to put in more effort.”
Say what ALTA offers. “You also need teachers who know how to teach those who find reading hard. ALTA…”
