Student Materials

ALTA classes use materials written and produced specifically for adult learners. ALTA is a programme of sequential instruction of the component skills of reading and writing built around the step-by-step teaching of phonics and analysis of the structure of words and language.  Students entering the programme move in sequence through Books 1, 2 & 3 to complete an entire ALTA level within an academic year.

Content is local to ensure students have the background needed for comprehension and is selected to foster essential life skills, self-esteem, tolerance and social cohesion. The directed discovery approach builds critical thinking and multi-sensory strategies meet the needs of many learning styles within a cooperative rather than competitive environment.

ALTA has developed the first local educational board games (ALTA Caribbean 6-in-1 Game Pack) and a comprehensive adult literacy programme comprising more than 60 published books at four levels, learning aids- phonic and rule cards, games and graded reading books.

ALTA Spelling Dictionary: For anyone who has to stop to think before writing certain words. Use either as a reference book to target your specific problem areas or work your way step-by-step through the rules and strategies to acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the mechanics of English spelling.

ALTA Caribbean Six-in-One Game Pack: Six board games with a Caribbean flavour to develop maths and all aspects of literacy: speaking, listening, reading, writing and thinking. For ages seven and up.

Teaching Materials

In a sponsored or workplace project, or in private tuition, the cost per student to complete an ALTA literacy level is listed in the table below. Note that the materials are subsidised: TT$20/term for students; TT$25 per term for tutors, but free after two years of volunteer teaching.

The materials listed below are for general sale except for the ALTA workbooks and accompanying tutors books. The ALTA workbooks and tutors books are sold only to registered ALTA-trained tutors or current tutors/assistants at ALTA community classes. A workbook cannot teach you to read, but it can provide the structure and practice activities for a trained teacher to progressively build literacy skills. Teacher training is key to any programme of instruction and particularly important when students have learning disabilities.
